Until today, the lives of Cordillera Peoples Elders are in danger with government authorities’ vilification and red tagging. The Indigenous arts and culture of the Cordillera Peoples are therefore put at risk by these continuous attacks for their commitment to the defense of their lands, territories, and rights. Another pressing issue is cultural assimilation, especially among the Cordillera Peoples children and youth in urban areas. It may lead to the non-practice of their customs and cultures as there is still persistent discrimination against the Cordillera Peoples, rooted in colonialist attitudes that demonize their identity and culture.
The project will contribute to protecting and preserving the continuance of the Cordillera Peoples ancestral wisdom by connecting the younger Cordillera diaspora to the older Cordillera diaspora and Elders and allowing intergenerational sharing of language, rituals, and ceremonies through music and dance. It can help popularize the Cordillera arts and culture by highlighting their connection to nature embedded in their songs and choreography, which can lead to understanding their value for sustainable living. This also brings an appreciation of the diversity of languages.
